Which features should I look for when choosing a reseller hosting provider?

I’m looking to start a small reseller hosting setup, but I’m doing this on a very strict shoestring budget. I want to know what features are absolute must-haves versus the premium add-ons I can compromise on while I validate the idea.

I am comfortable skipping expensive automation like WHMCS and handling invoicing/provisioning manually for my first few clients to keep costs down. I don't necessarily need expensive "fully managed" support or heavy hand-holding from the parent host.

However, I still want to provide a reliable experience, especially since I'm aiming to pitch to local businesses and my university network. I'm specifically keeping an eye out for data centers in or near India to ensure low latency.

When looking at entry-level budget reseller plans, what technical features do you consider non-negotiable?

A few things on my mind:

  • White-labeling: Do ultra-budget tiers typically hide the parent host's branding effectively (custom name servers, anonymous host names)?
  • Resource Limits: Aside from raw storage, what hidden limits (like linodes, I/O usage, or concurrent connections) should I aggressively check for so my account doesn't get unexpectedly suspended?
  • Developer Access: Since I rely heavily on terminal operations, is it common for budget hosts to completely lock down SSH access?
  • Control Panels: Are there specific, cheaper alternatives to cPanel (like DirectAdmin) that recommend looking for in these budget packages?
Would love to hear what specific features saved you, when starting out on the cheaper end of the spectrum!

For budget reseller hosting, I’d focus less on “unlimited” claims and more on clear limits.
Must-haves for me would be: custom nameservers, private/white-label branding, LiteSpeed or good web server performance, daily/weekly backups, clear CPU/RAM/I/O/inode limits, basic SSH access, SSL, malware protection, and quick support.
DirectAdmin is a good cheaper alternative to cPanel if you’re trying to keep costs low. Also, if your clients are in India/Nepal, definitely choose a server location close to that region for better speed.
